Transgender documentarian Sam Feder's recent film "Increased Examination" offers a powerful two-part viewpoint – both an personal profile of a key trans activist and a critical examination of journalistic coverage about trans rights.

The film follows ACLU lawyer Chase Strangio as he gets ready for legal presentations in the important highest court case US v Skirmetti. This legal battle happened in December 2024, with the judiciary finally deciding in favor of Tennessee's argument, practically enabling limitations on medical transition for trans young people to remain in effect across over twenty US states.

We produced Heightened Scrutiny in just 16 months, stated Feder during an interview. In comparison, my previous film Disclosure took me five years, so this was a real push. Our goal was to generate dialogue so people would understand more about the case.

While Feder offers a thorough analysis of how mainstream news organizations have disseminated anti-trans rhetoric, the film's primary achievement may be its compelling depiction of Strangio. Usually a measured lawyer in media appearances, Strangio reveals his humanity throughout the production.

This represented a major challenge, to open up aspects of my life to a camera lens that I had made efforts to keep private, stated Strangio. Feder explained he wanted younger people to know that we struggled, to see what was done in defense of these fights for our material survival.

The tattoo scene is among my most cherished sections in the movie, stated Strangio. Being tattooed is nearly like a contemplative experience for me, to be completely aware in my body and to consider it as a vessel for things that are significant to me.

I don't want people to end up in a state of perpetual discouragement because of what the law is denying us, explained Strangio. I strive to be in a method of using the law to lessen harm, but not to make it some type of conduit for our liberatory potential. The government is not going to be the mirror through which we view ourselves.
